Acrylonitrile

CH2CHCN

Acrylonitrile is is an organic compound used to manufacture hard plastics, synthetic fibers, synthetic rubbers, and as a fuel component for the space shuttle. Today's telephones, televisions, radios and other electronics are possible because of acrylonitrile. Acrylonitrile makes clothing and fabrics more durable and able to hold color and shape longer. Synthetic fibers and rubbers now allow car tires to be safely used for more than 60,000 miles instead of the 20,000 or 30,000 miles as with older technology, reducing the number of tires that go into landfills. Synthetic rubbers made from acrylonitrile last longer, take more friction, stretch farther, and withstand higher temperatures. Acrylonitrile is also the major raw material for acrylamide.

Fly Faster With Cornerstone Acrylonitrile

Cornerstone enables the U.S. military to fly faster.

Our high quality acrylonitrile is sought after as a key component in the carbon fibers that go into aerospace and aeronautic technology. Cornerstone supplies acrylonitrile to America’s largest producer of aerospace-grade carbon fibers and a leading supplier to the U.S. Department of Defense. Our acrylonitrile goes into the carbon fibers that make up the wings of the U.S. military’s F-35 fighter, helping ensure U.S. military dominance in flight for decades to come.

The same lightweight carbon fiber that is used to build military aircrafts also enables U.S. Navy ships to carry more aircrafts than ever before. The USS America can now hold up to 13 F-35Bs for deployment. This is the closest we have seen the United States Marine Corps and Navy come to executing the “Lightning Carrier” concept which would deploy between 16 to 20 F-35Bs on amphibious assault ships. Without Cornerstone’s acrylonitrile, deployments like this would be impossible.

Cornerstone’s acrylonitrile goes into the carbon fibers that make up components of the largest heavy-lift cargo helicopter in use by the U.S. military – the Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion. Our acrylonitrile also goes into carbon fibers that make innovative tactical transport helicopters like the UH-60 Black Hawks stronger, quieter, and operable in diverse climates.

Cornerstone acrylonitrile is used in the production carbon fibers that help passenger airplanes such as the A350 use less fuel which reduces emissions and increases range, opening new and longer haul flight routes.
